Weekend Recap: Bad Football

Let's start off with that debacle on Saturday. When we got to Jack's Firehouse in Philly (we did the dinner/tour combo), I was extremely upset that there were no TVs and I wouldn't be able to see at least the beginning of the PSU/OSU game!!!! What kind of bar doesn't have a TV?! After getting over my initial anger, I sat back and enjoyed the evening's festivities. Dinner was great and we had lots of laughs. Thanks again to Patti for setting this up! On our way across the street to the Penitentiary I stopped in a bar and saw the score was 17-7 in the 2nd quarter. Not great, but not bad either. I still had hope! When I came back and saw it was 24-7, I knew there was no hope. Then I started talking to a few PSUers in the bar and imagine my surprise when I heard that the problem this week was the DEFENSE and not really #14 and the offense. Shocked I was. Then I come home and read that we had a 4th and 2 on OSU's line in the 2nd quarter (with the score 17-7) and we PUNTED?! Now, I was at the 2006 Orange Bowl and I saw first hand the nightmare that is our kicking game, but to not even TRY a field goal? What does that say about our offense and special teams? Two words: No confidence. That is pathetic. Of course #14 threw an pick six too. Unfortunately, the Nittany Nation has come to expect it and it's only news these days when it doesn't happen. OSU 37, PSU 17 (note that we scored our last TD in the 4th quarter on a punt return).

In hindsight, I'm glad we did the "Terror Behind the Walls" Tour instead of torturing ourselves watching the game! The dinner/tour combo allowed us to skip the long general admission line, but just like Disney, just when you you're in, there's still a line behind the door.... It did move quickly and they ran a program about the ghosts in the jail, from the Travel Channel, to keep us entertained. The jail is creepy and there were times we were scared...though less scared than if I had stuck around and watched Penn State, obviously. I'd like to take the guided tour some time to learn more of the jail's history too. If you want any more info check out the website in my previous post.

So if being tortured by the Nittany Lions wasn't enough, we went to see the Jets/Bills game Sunday. The tailgating was a lot of fun with Big E, his PSE&G partners in crime Bill & Joe, and Joe' daughter Debbie & her husband Ruy. The food was great and they kept us in stitches the entire time. Then we entered the hell that is Giants Stadium on Jets game day. Why did I chose to torture myself, you ask? Simply because I couldn't get rid of the tix for this game and told Big E I'd go with him. My intent was to cheer on the Bills' Paul Posluszny (PSU alum), but he broke his arm in Sept. So much for that. After falling asleep on Kev's arm, I went and bought what had to be the worst coffee ever. Luckily there was not much going on during the game so I had plenty of time to go back and get a new cup. Thank God for the Kevin James lookalike in front of us that kept us entertained because the game certainly did not ("Hey Chad, we're the ones in green!"). We left with the Bills up a whopping 6-3 and I ask you, how bad are the Bills that they can't score more points against the Jets?!?!?!! While in the bathroom I heard the crowd erupt. Immediately I assumed that the Jets scored. Wrong. The crowd was simply excited to see a touchdown -- even if it was scored by the Bills. Final score: Bill 13, Jets 3. Thank God I don't have to go see them again this season.
