Go State Beat the Buckeyes!

This Saturday our beloved #24 Nittany Lions host the #1 OSU Buckeyes at 8pm. ESPN's Game Day is broadcasting live on Saturday a.m. (10-noon). It's going to be nuts. If you've ever been to an 8pm game in Happy Valley, you know the crowd is going to be rocking. I am embarrassed to say that I will be missing part of the game though. I know, what kind of fan am I? Weeks ago, before kickoff time was official, Patti Archer put together an evening in Philly: Dinner and then the "Terror Behind the Walls" Halloween tour of the Eastern State Penitentiary. It looks really cool so we jumped on board - check it out: http://www.easternstate.org/.

Hopefully we'll get out of the tour and back into the bar to catch the end of the game and celebrate a PSU victory. But then again, with #14 behind center and JayPa calling the plays from the booth, I'm not as confident as I was in '05. Those of you that follow PSU football know know #14 can be brilliant on one play and then be a complete idiot the next (watch a replay of the Michigan game for proof). We've had some injuries to our D-line (Jarred Odrick) and fullback Matt Hahn. On the plus side:

Austin Scott is finally gone, thanks to that sexual assault charge a few weeks ago & his life has been a complete shambles since then: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3075159. In the immortal words of Livia Soprano - OH POOR YOU! (FYI, this guy has been nothing but a complete bust for PSU save for a few TDs in the 2006 Orange Bowl).
Anthony Scirotto & Chris Baker have not yet been to trial for their role in that off campus fight in April.
Nothing has come of the fight at the HUB involving a few of our more stellar scholar athletes either.

Things are looking up for the Nittany Nation, I tell you!!!

I'm don't like making any predictions, but I do have some money riding on this, so I guess I'll go with PSU 14 OSU 10. I'm sure that will get some of my OSU friends talking.

Thanks for your concern about our QB. This is his first year. But I am sure with your QB and QB coach you have nothing to fear. Don't let facts like this little quote from ESPN bother you:

"They'll face their stiffest challenge yet with an Ohio State defense that has held opponents to a measly 7.8 points a game -- tops in the country."

Oh and enjoy the trip to Philly!

Be Well!

Winter is upon us and what better way to warm up and stay healthy than with a hot cup of oatmeal to start the day. I'm not talking about the Quaker instant oatmeal (though, when in a pinch, it's better than Frankenberries!), I'm referring to the good, old fashioned oatmeal your grandma used to make (note: your grandma, not mine!). I eat oatmeal a few times a week for breakfast. I mix in some walnuts, dried cranberries and top it off with cinnamon and a little brown sugar and viola' - oatmeal actually tastes good!!

I did a little research on oatmeal and here's what I found out. Oatmeal is full of soluble fiber (as adults we need around 25 g/day, protein (helps build muscle), complex carbs (takes your body longer to break these bad boys up which in turn keeps your blood from spiking ) and silicon (good for skin, hair, bones and teeth - who knew?!). To boot, oats have been labeled a "heart healthy" food by the FDA, proven to lower cholesterol if eaten regularly.

So grab a bowl, add some fruit (fresh is obviously better), some nuts and mix in some flax seed or wheat germ and you'll really increase/improve your nutrition in one little bowl!

Between Two Worlds: Escape from Tyranny: Growing Up in the Shadow of Saddam by Zainab Salbi and Laurie Becklund

Thanks to Tracy for recommending this. Zainab Salbi is my age. She grew up, the privileged child of a pilot in 1970's Iraq. In the early '80's, her father became Saddam's private pilot her entire family's life changed in an instant. Her story sheds light on the history of Iraq, on how those closest to Saddam lived to survive, knowing he was crazy, and the effects on her life and her family's, despite being part of Saddam's inner circle. She sounds like an incredible woman and I can't help but think how insignificant my life has been when compared to what she has accomplished.....
